Our proposals for an integrated Fylde Coast rail network
Reconnecting Fleetwood by a rail link connecting with the national network
at Poulton and making obvious use of the existing rail bed running from
Wyre Dock itself to Poulton Station has now to be a priority for North Fylde
communities and businesses.
However a wider agenda that strengthens the entire Fylde coast by utilising
the light rail capability of Blackpool Transport, potentially with other partners,
could create an integrated network through tram train services merging
with light rail operation.
These would feed into mainline rail services now running between Preston and
Blackpool North. The current extension of the Blackpool tram system to
Blackpool North is a first step towards an enhanced system taking trams
along Squires Gate Lane to serve retail, business and colleges.
Continuing the tram service further to Layton and important health centre cluster at Victoria Hospital would be a further plausible and desirable option for the community.
All strategic options require broad scrutiny and wide vision over the next several decades.
